Chapter Twenty

What the hell? He was ready and willing for another round. He was full of energy, vim, and vigor. What they’d just shared was only a warm-up, yet here she was falling asleep in his arms.

Her black hair spilled down over his pillow. What he wouldn’t give to run his hands through the silky strands, but she looked much too peaceful to disturb. It must have taken great strength and energy for her spirit to enter his body and bring him back from that cold, dark place. So near ultimortem.

He’d never given that much blood before. Not even that time during his escape from HuBReC when he stole a canoe in the Tuniit village and gotten clubbed in the head. When his faster than normal recovery had raised suspicion, Kedric traded blood for his attacker’s canoe. Though it had taken a few days to regain consciousness from the blood loss, he hadn’t been as deeply entrenched in the abyss that Myia found him in today.

If it hadn’t been for her, he never would have regained consciousness. He kissed her lips once more and settled into bed next to her. “Thank you for bringing me back.”

Her soft murmuring wasn’t decipherable, except for the names Max and Finn. She snuggled closer to him, intoxicating him with the scent of perfume, woman, and sex. In a few minutes, she’d be asleep. He’d wait until then to clean himself up and check on Finn.

He’d hoped the guy would’ve left the infirmary quickly after the transfusion, but he had anticipated a problem, which was why he instructed Max to imprison the doctor if he overstayed his welcome.

That must have been what Myia tried to communicate.

Satisfied she was asleep, Kedric slipped out of the bed, covered her with a blanket, and then took a quick shower, after which he dressed in clean, pressed clothes.

He wanted to make sure he looked as healthy as possible for his visit to Finn. Only five hours had passed since he’d lain down on the hospital bed. It was an unremarkable duration to be out of commission and hardly notable of a mention.

Thank the Spirits for small favors. He’d have enough trouble if Finn mentioned his unique blood to anyone.

Especially to Griffin.

After retrieving the dungeon’s keys from his office and tucking his Flesheater knife into the back of his waistband, he followed the toasted aroma of freshly ground coffee beans into the kitchen. It was nearly dawn, and a steaming pot of caffeine awaited the castle’s early morning crew. Cook poured him a mug and then offered him a fist-sized banana muffin still cooling on the rack. Kedric thanked him and carried the breakfast down to the dungeon.

As he descended the stone steps, heat and moisture assaulted him. It was like walking into a steam bath. The natural underground hot springs made the humidity so thick, not only could he taste the musty, dank air, but he could chew it.

Perhaps it was time to put in a ventilation system and dehumidifier.
